Gutters are an important part for keeping rain water away from the foundation. The first thing you should check is to make sure that the gutters are clean of debris as well as the downspouts are in proper working order. We suggest that the gutters should be directed away using extensions that are 8-10 feet away from the foundation. This can be done using extensions above grade or having them buried under the ground to a pop up in the yard to disperse the water.
Gutters can contain debris disrupting the water flow and causing them to overspill and drop water next to the foundation causing water problems in the basement. While some people say gutter cleaning is only needed two times a year, this depends on the the amount of trees near your house. Gutters should be checked at least once a month for debris. If gutters are overflowing in a storm, they should be cleaned as soon as possible.
